Gramaphone inspiration

Karen here. Was walking down Main Street around King Edward — incidentally, where I grew up — which is sometimes called "Antique Alley" for the huge cluster of antique stores along the strip from 25th to 33rd avenues.

There's one store that's always fascinated me. The name of it is written in pen on the window of the front door. It is overflowing with stuff, unbelievably dusty and completely disorganized. While I lived in the area for 7 formative childhood years, I did not go into it until about 2 months ago.

Which is to say, if you need a blast from the past, taking a stroll in there is highly recommended. I saw this peeking out the window at me on our way to dinner, and thought of us and our railcar.

Design Nerd Jam 3.1: Pedal-Powered Railway Parade - UPDATE

Thanks to everyone who attended Nerd Jam 3.1 at eatART's industrial hangar! To see photos and videos of the ideas and presentations we came up with for our human-powered railway vehicles, check out this page on our wiki.

Generous donations by attendees contributed to over $100 dollars raised for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Many thanks for your contributions!

There were great contributions of ideas from everyone involved, running the gamut from the fantastical to highly pragmatic and a firm direction has emerged for two prototypes to be developed over the next 10 weeks!

2 teams * 2 visions * 2 contraptions: Through a process of rapid evolution and fusion, two ideas came forward as our initial prototype rail-riders. Both designs will be developed and constructed together at eatART over the next 10 weeks. Check-out the project page for more information soon!

Team Locomotive; led by Eesmyal Santos-Brault with technical support from Wade Bortz, will develop "makes it go" part of the train.
Team Gramophonica; co-led by Natalie Ephier and Maia Love with technical support from Leigh Cristie, will develop the audaciously beautiful, multi-sensory, musical railcar.

All nerds are encouraged to come out and lend a hand to the construction and implementation of the projects. Whether your interest is in technical design, construction, mapping and site selection or coordination and event planning, there's a fit for you.

Think Light

This is just one option...50' and full of air. He is waiting to be used - in case we can find a use for him.
